Leak-tightness of the pipeline is continuously monitored by the petroleum product leakage control system, within which the pressure of petroleum product flow is measured every 20 kilometres. In case of uncharacteristic changes, the control system allows LRT to determine coordinates of the damaged spot with a precision of 50 metres. As soon as a notification is received, technical service and safety experts are dispatched to the origin of the disturbance.

Detailed inspection of the pipeline’s technical condition takes place once every three to four years through the employment of internal ultrasound or electromagnetic diagnostic systems. This control method detects loss of metal inside the pipeline; defects caused by corrosion, cracks, or illegal connections, with a high degree of precision.

The company’s cooperative partner for these inspections is the company Weatherford, which fields the latest in oil industry technologies.

Since 2010 LatRosTrans has been occupied with cleaning of the Polotsk-Ventspils crude oil pipeline. Keeping crude oil in a non-functioning crude oil pipeline over the long-term may lead to a high risk of corrosion and a potential ecological disaster, therefore it is important to replace the oil in the pipeline with nitrogen, which is much more suitable for conservation of the pipeline. Upon expulsion of oil from the pipeline, it is filled with nitrogen – a mixture of inert gas, which is a safer and more environmentally friendly linefill.

As part of this project, settling basins for chemical and biological purification of waste waters evolved from the cleaning of the crude oil pipeline were, built in the territory of the Dzukste pumping station. Purification of waste waters is carried out by the Czech company Limek plus, while the quality of purification is monitored by the experienced Latvian provider of environment protection services VentEko.
